THE STATUTES
OF THE CATHOLIC MOVEMENT
„WARRIORS OF MARY”

PREAMBLE

The Community of Warriors of Mary – a Catholic movement – was born in the Catholic Church and for the Catholic Church. Its founder is Fr. Dominik Chmielewski, a Salesian. The movement was created as a praying Church’s response to the contemporary challenges facing the community of believers and the whole world. Its goal is to form young men who, in accordance with the vocation received from God, should become faithful witnesses of Christ, and with the support of St. Joseph’s intercession, strive to be good husbands and fathers fulfilling their mission in the Church and society. The Maryan charism of the Community uniting men ready to fight for the highest values and truths professed by the Catholic Church arises from entrusting Jesus Christ by His Immaculate Mother, Mary. The spiritual path of the Warriors of Mary, based on Divine Revelation and the teaching of the Catholic Church, refers to the contents of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium of the Second Vatican Council: “And while the Church, in the person of the Most Holy Mary, has already reached perfection, through which it exists immaculate and without blemish, Christians still strive to overcome sin and grow in holiness; therefore, they lift their eyes to Mary, who shines to the whole community of the chosen as a model of virtues. Piously meditating on her and contemplating her in the light of the Word, which became flesh, the Church with deep reverence penetrates more deeply into the highest mystery of the Incarnation and increasingly resembles its Bridegroom” (no. 65).

I. GENERAL PROVISIONS
§1

1. The Warriors of Mary Movement (hereinafter referred to as the Movement), established by the Inspector of the Salesian Society of St. Wojciech in Piła, was formed during regularly held open formation meetings for men (clergy and lay people), organized by the Salesians of Don Bosco in Ląd nad Wartą.
2. The Movement operates in Poland and beyond its borders, with the permission of the appropriate church authorities and in accordance with the provisions of the law.
3. The Movement does not have legal personality within the Church.
4. The activities of the Movement are based on the provisions of canon law, the Statute and relevant provisions of secular law.

§2

1. For pastoral reasons, the Movement is subject to the Polish Episcopal Conference, which approves its Statute and appoints one of the bishops as the delegate of the Polish Episcopal Conference for the Movement, who cooperates with the Inspector – the higher superior of the Salesian Society of St. Wojciech in Piła, as well as with the Moderator of the Movement.
2. The Salesian Society of St. Wojciech in Piła, ul. Świętego Jana Bosko 1, 64-920 Piła, is the legal entity that directly oversees the proper functioning of the Movement.
3. The Movement was founded and operates within the Salesian charism, therefore the Inspector of the Salesian Society of St. Wojciech in Piła appoints the Moderator of the Movement from among the Salesian priests and informs the Polish Episcopal Conference of his choice.
4. The main center of the Movement is located in Ląd nad Wartą, at the Center for Spirituality and Culture, Ląd nad Wartą 101, 62-406 Lądek.

§3

The Movement, as an association of active Catholics, fully and unconditionally submits to the Pope, Bishops and higher superiors of the Salesian Society of St. Wojciech in Piła in its activities.

§4

The patron of the Movement is St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian Society and the Salesian Family, a saint of the Catholic Church.

§5

The activity of the Movement in the individual dioceses of the Catholic Church requires formal consent from the local Bishop.

§6

The Movement may use its own graphic symbol as its emblem (the emblem design is provided in §22).

II. CHARISMA OF THE MOVEMENT

§7

1. The Charisma of the Movement is the imitation of the virtues of the Most Holy Mary in everyday life, as well as personal total consecration to Her Immaculate Heart and protection, for the greater glory of God, the Church, and the victory of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
2. The main goal of the Movement is the growth of its members in faith, hope, and love, for the greater glory of God and for the benefit of His holy Church, as well as the formation of men – according to the teachings of the Catholic Church – to be good Christians and responsible husbands and fathers. The path leading to this goal is sacramental life combined with devotion to the Most Holy Mary and practicing Church-approved devotions, especially those that honor the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
3. In pursuit of the mission of the Warrior of Mary, members of the Movement refer to the teachings of St. John Bosco, especially to:

a) the preventive (preventive and educational) system – an educational method that is not based on the use of force, but appeals to the potential for good, reason, and religion that the student carries within. The educator, fully respecting the young person’s free will, becomes close to him to accompany him on the path of authentic growth. The preventive system involves anticipating the actions of the ward to prevent him from doing something improper;
b) unlimited dedication to Jesus Christ (Salus Credentium) and the protection of the Immaculate Virgin Mary (Auxilium Christianorum).

4. Members of the Movement, receiving the gift of the Redeemer from the Cross: “Behold, your mother” (Jn 19:27), entrust and devote themselves entirely to the Immaculate for their own sanctification, as well as to cooperate with Her maternal mission of directing the heart of every person towards Christ. Christ Himself on Calvary performed the first act of entrustment, giving the disciple to Mary and Mary to the disciple (cf. Jn 19:25-27), so that the disciple’s life from that moment on is marked by Her maternal presence (cf. RM 45).
5. The intermediate goals are:

a) formation of men in their responsibility for the family and society;
b) care for the spiritual growth of men and their families;
c) support for marriages in overcoming all difficulties;
d) building, supporting, and strengthening the attitude of a husband and father;
e) shaping men in their Catholic identity, so that they are ready to fight for the highest values and Truths professed and proclaimed by the Catholic Church.

6. The tasks performed by members of the Movement in the course of carrying out any functions in the Movement belong to the category of volunteering, hence they are carried out without remuneration.

§8

The Movement achieves its goals through the formation of its members and apostolic activity.

Explanations of the graphic sign of the Warriors of Mary Movement

SWORD – symbol of spiritual struggle against sin, Satan, and our own masculine weaknesses that destroy marriage and family so much today. Angels possessed swords in many visions of mystics and saints as attributes of spiritual struggle against evil. They are also a reference to the tradition of the medieval chivalry ethos (defense of the weakest, special respect for women, the code of honor of chivalry). Some quotes:
“Strap your sword to your side, mighty warrior, along with your honor and majesty! In your majesty, ride out to victory, defending truth, humility, and justice. Go forth to perform awe-inspiring deeds!” (Psalm 45:4-5)
“Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.” (Revelation 1:12-13, 16; also see Revelation 2:12).

TWO SWORDS – symbolize brotherhood, community, and the fact that we are not alone in this fight. We have brothers we can count on who accompany us in prayer and growing in faith.
SHIELD – symbol of defense, protection. God is our shield and defense, and we are to become shields and defenses for our loved ones, family, and Christian values that we represent every day. Some quotes:
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the strength of my salvation, and my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2)
“Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle, you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:11-17)

VINE – symbol of the fruit that we bear, our growth in faith, and climbing towards salvation, towards Jesus. A symbol of being grafted into the Mystical Body of Christ.

STARS – a reference to the stars in the wreath of the Woman from the Apocalypse. As the Wisdom of Sirach says, “The beauty of the stars is the beauty of heaven, a glittering ornament on the heights of the Lord. On the orders of the Holy One they stand in their appointed places; they never relax in their watches.” (Sirach 43:9-10)

TOTUS TUUS – I am all yours, Mary!

IMAGE OF MARY – a young, beautiful Lady who dazzles us with her beauty and charm, always pointing and leading us to Jesus. Full of Grace – Kecharitomene.

Attachment no. 1

Words of the Warrior of Mary’s oath spoken during the knighting ceremony:
In the presence of Almighty God and the Most Holy Mary, the Helper of the Faithful, all the Angels and Saints, and especially St. Michael the Archangel and you, my Brothers, I lay my hands on the Cross and the Word of God, which is the Sword of the Spirit.
Holding the sword, the symbol of my spiritual fight for the salvation of my soul, my loved ones, and every person whom the Most Holy Mary will send me to, I pledge to give my whole life to Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, through the hands and Heart of the Most Holy Mary. I pledge to fight against my sins, faults, and everything that separates me from the Love of God and man.
I pledge to defend the Catholic Church, the highest values of Christian life, Christian marriage, and family. Mary, I am all yours. All that I have is yours. Use me as you will for building the Kingdom of God on earth and for complete victory over Satan.
Totus Tuus, Mary. Amen.

Attachment no. 2
Brotherly conversation

Once a year, the candidates willing to be knighted as Warriors of Mary must pass a positive brotherly conversation. Every year, the Movement Coordinator appoints an experienced person – a knighted Warrior of Mary, who is a member of the Coordinators Council or a regional Leader – to be responsible for preparing and conducting the brotherly conversation. In agreement with the Moderator of the Movement and the Coordinator of the Movement, this person prepares the process of verifying the candidates for knighthood. The verification process of the candidates consists of ensuring that the candidate meets all the requirements regarding both spiritual and human formation (§8 and §15) and that he is fully ready to take the Sword Oath. The form and method of conducting the brotherly conversations are determined individually each year.

Attachment no. 3
Code of the Warrior of Mary

The Code of the Warrior of Mary is a document containing information on the principles of the Movement’s functioning in a given formation year, the current organizational structure of the Movement, organizational information, rules for creating new groups, the tasks and responsibilities of Leaders and priests, an explanation of who the Warrior of Mary is, information on how to become a Warrior of Mary, the Warriors’ Hymn, and the Act of Consecration.
